Police were called Monday to clear dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters who set up camp at Paris’ Sorbonne University to protest Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza.

The demonstration at the iconic institution came days after protests at the capital’s elite Sciences Po University, and follow a wave of campus rallies in the U.S.

“We need to raise awareness about these things, these are important issues and as students, we feel concerned,” said student protester Louis Maziere.

The university, one of the world’s oldest, closed its buildings for the day during the protest as students chanted “Free Palestine” and urged the institution to condemn Israel for its war in Gaza.

Israel launched its war on Hamas in the wake of the Oct. 7 attack in southern Israel that killed 1,200 people and resulted in 253 people being taken hostage. At least 34,488 people have been killed in Gaza in the subsequent conflict.
