After decades of ethnic tensions and war, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008.

The move was partially recognised by the international community, with the United States and most European countries as allies.

The NATO-led peacekeeping forces have helped guarantee the region's security, but a diplomatic problem with Serbia and with what many would consider the region’s superpower, Russia, remains.
