An eyewitness described a “thunderous crash” as a domestic flight crashed in Pokhara, Nepal on Sunday, in what is being described as the country’s worst air crash in three decades.
“We saw a lot of smoke and realized it was an airline crash and we rushed to the site,” Mehmood Khan said at the site of the crash, which killed at least 68 people.
The Yeti Airlines flight was travelling from the capital of Kathmandu to Pokhara when it went down with 72 people on board, including 51 foreign nationals.
Late in the evening, officials called off search operations for the day, saying rescue efforts would resume on Monday. The weather had been clear and there was no immediate indication of what had caused the crash, officials said.
This was Nepal’s deadliest air crash since 1992, when a Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A300 crashed into a hillside upon approach to Kathmandu, killing all 167 people on board, according to the Aviation Safety Network database.
