Mexico's piñata makers are putting the finishing touches on scores of colourful and intricately-decorated piñatas that people of all ages will smash open to reap the tasty rewards inside during this Christmas season. Many of the piñatas used at community celebrations known as "posadas" are made at piñata workshops located around Mexico City.

But, with the pandemic still raging in Mexico, piñata makers are worried about sales.

In fact, Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday that in addition to cancelling year-end travel plans and avoid exchanging Christmas presents, Mexicans should also not take part in as many posadas this year, where friends and family typically gather in a single house.

Piñatas are broken during the posadas, small get-togethers to commemorate Mary and Joseph's search for shelter on Christmas Eve before the birth of Jesus Christ. The smashing of the piñata at these festivities is highly symbolic; the breaking symbolizes the human struggle to fight temptation and his wish to eliminate evil.
