Outrage erupted after the eleven men who gangraped Bilkis Bano in 2002 during the Gujarat riots were granted early release. Bilkis' three-year-old daughter was among the seven killed by the mob that day. The release of these men came on Independence Day - the same day that the Prime Minister spoke about women's empowerment. Senior Supreme Court advocate Rebecca John weighed in on the release of the lifers, who were garlanded and fed sweets as they exited jail.
