An industrial park in the western German city of Leverkusen was rocked by an explosion in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Several people are reported to have been injured following the blast, which has dominated German social media.
The Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance released a statement telling residents to remain inside and keep doors and windows closed until the mass smoke dissipates, and listed the explosion as an ‘extreme threat’ to those in the surrounding areas.
Police have also closed off several highways near the plant as tests are carried out on the toxicity level of the smoke and firefighters put an end to the blaze.
Smoke from the explosion could be seen in the neighboring city of Cologne, while one social media user shared that they felt their house shake despite living seven miles outside of the city.
The source of the explosion remains unclear, but initial reports indicate that it is believed to have originated from a waste incinerator on the site.
