WhatsApp messages show how government staff struggled to explain away a series of drinks attended by then-prime minister Boris Johnson during lockdown.

Mr Johnson insists he did not mislead the House of Commons when he said he did not know the gatherings broke his own lockdown rules.

But an inquiry now suggests it was “obvious” the events broke the law.
