Paris' "most beautiful avenue" the Champs-Elysees turned bright red for the Christmas season on Sunday, while the country remains under lockdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The event was held with only a handful of people including Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo.

"Paris will remain a celebration," she said at a ceremony held on a rooftop overlooking the Arc de Triomphe monument.

But the avenue has in recent years been hit by protests turning sometimes violent. With a second lockdown this year, the avenue usually busy before Christmas is desperately empty.

The number of new daily coronavirus infections in France rose by 13,157 to 2.14 million on Sunday, and the number of deaths by 215, health ministry data showed. But figures in the last six days have shown the spread is slowing in the country.
