Panic Buttons, CCTV Cameras In Chennai Buses For Women Safety

500 buses in Chennai, operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, have been fitted with panic buttons and CCTV cameras to help women raise alarm for help if required. The system with facial recognition capability also transmits 30 seconds of video footage to the control room, to give them a sense of the situation in the bus. Installed as part of the Nirbhaya Safe City Project, NDTV's Sam Daniel took a ride in one such bus and spoke to Dr K Gopal, Transport Secretary of Tamil Nadu, on the aim, scope, concerns and expansion plans.
