More than a dozen people were arrested after a massive group of juvenile looters ransacked businesses across Philadelphia on Tuesday, according to police.

Interim Philadelphia Police Commissioner John Stanford said that the chaos started around 7:30 p.m. local time, with numerous 911 calls about “large groups of juveniles” moving through the city centre after a “peaceful protest” ended near the city hall.

Several businesses were broken into about half an hour later, with about 15 to 20 arrests made and at least two firearms recovered, according to Stanford. He added that it is uncertain if the above was connected with the stores being ransacked, but that the investigation is ongoing.

"These were not protesters, these were criminals. These were people that took advantage of an opportunity — and again, looking to destroy our city," Stanford said, emphasizing that the looting was not related to an earlier protest over the fatal police shooting of Eddi Irizarry.
