Waukesha police said in an update Sunday evening that 20 people, including children, were struck after an SUV drove through crowds of people at an afternoon Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wis.

Police said there were fatalities among those who were struck, though they were not able to confirm the exact number at this time.

“A red SUV drove into our Christmas parade that we were holding downtown. More than 20 individuals were injured as a result of this incident,” Waukesha Police Chief Daniel Thompson told reporters.

Police say an officer discharged their weapon at the vehicle, and they do have a person of interest in custody. No bystanders were struck by the gunfire, police said.

Thompson said some of the injured were taken to hospital by ambulance, others by police and some by family and friends.
