Onion prices in Chennai have nearly tripled touching Rs 150 a kilo due to short supply from Maharashtra following heavy rains. Hit by job losses and salary cuts due to the coronavirus pandemic, many say they have stopped consumption of onion as its unaffordable. Others have cut down consumption. The state government sells Egyptian onions at Rs 45 a kilo at it's farm fresh outlets, but consumers say these shops have too little stock. The opposition DMK says this is an indication of things to come, with the new farm laws in place. NDTV's Sam Daniel spoke to consumers in Chennai.
