The Ohio River, ranked as the second-most endangered river in America for 2023 by the national nonprofit American Rivers, has raised concerns among the Ohio River Way, a regional coalition of over 100 communities and organizations along the river. The coalition is urging Congress to allocate funds for a comprehensive restoration plan for the entire basin. The designation follows the hazardous chemical derailment incident in East Palestine, Ohio, in February, where 20 cars leaked toxic substances, contaminating the air, soil, and water in the surrounding area.
The American Rivers report highlighted the persistent issues of industrial, municipal, and agricultural pollution in the Ohio River watershed, despite some improvements since the implementation of the Clean Water Act in 1972. The pollution poses threats not only to the diverse ecosystems of the Ohio River, but also to the drinking water source of over five million people. The Ohio River Way welcomes the report's spotlight on the critical state of the river and urges swift action to address the challenges facing this endangered waterway.

Al Jazeera’s John Hendren reports from Cincinnati, in the state of Ohio.
