Former president Barack Obama thanked Robert McCurdy, the artist who painted his official White House portrait, for “taking on a much more difficult subject” as the painting was unveiled alongside the official portrait of Michelle Obama at the White House on Wednesday.

Obama also joked that McCurdy had convinced him “not to wear a tan suit,” referring to the controversy surrounding his 2014 press conference on the military response to the Islamic State where his suit drew criticism for being too casual.

Former president Donald Trump did not unveil the Obama’s official White House portraits while he was in office, which had been the tradition under previous administrations.

Sharon Sprung painted Michelle Obama’s portrait, who she acknowledged as “one of the few” women to paint an official White House portrait.
