Former president Barack Obama was joined by his wife and former first lady, Michelle, as the couple broke ground on the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, Illinois, on Tuesday.
The centre will be built in the 200-hectare Jackson Park in Chicago’s South Side, which was first developed as the site of the 1893 World’s Fair.
The project is expected to take four years to complete, but educational programs will begin this year, Obama said. The former president said he would donate $2 million to a summer jobs program in the community.
Obama grew up in Hawaii and went to college in New York and California, but owns a home and spent most of his political career in Chicago prior to being elected to the nation’s top job.
