Speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, New York Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Detectives James W. Essig outlined what police are alleging to be a criminal plot involving the drugging of nightclub patrons in the New York area with the intent to rob them - a plot which ultimately resulted in two overdose deaths, police say.

The 2022 deaths of John Umberger and Julio Ramirez have been ruled to be homicides after they were given drugs tainted with fentanyl, according to police.

Ramirez, 25, was found dead in the back of a taxi on April 21, 2022, and his bank accounts were drained after a night out at Ritz Bar and Lounge.

Umberger, 33, was found dead inside the East 61st Street apartment on June 1, 2022.

Police allege these incidents are part of a wave of drug-assisted thefts in nightclubs across the city.
