U.S. President Joe Biden on Thursday gave an update on the unidentified flying objects (UFOs) shot down over North America this past weekend, saying there is “nothing right now to suggest” that they were part of China’s spy balloon program or any other country’s surveillance strategy.

He said the intelligence community believes the three objects were most likely tied to private companies or research institutions studying weather or scientific research.

Biden added that he would be speaking to Chinese president Xi soon and that he made "no apologies" for taking down their balloon.

He also said that the seeming increase in the number of unidentified flying objects being spotted in the skies above the U.S. and Canada was due to Norad increasing its radar sensitivity. He said the actual number of flying objects being detected has not increased.

Outlining the steps his government would take to “deal safely and effectively” with objects in U.S. airspace, Biden said it will first establish a better inventory of unmanned airborne objects and make sure it is “accessible and up to date.”

Second, he said the government would implement further measures to improve its ability to detect unmanned objects in U.S. airspace and third, will update rules for launching unmanned objects in U.S. skies. Lastly, he said the secretary of state will launch an effort to update global norms.
