British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Friday he was hoping talks with union leaders next week would be "constructive," as thousands of workers in industries including rail and health care continue to take strike action over pay.

The government has called on unions to cancel the strike action while it holds talks, but also plans to bring in legislation to make key public services like ambulances maintain minimum safety levels when strike action is taken by staff.

"We want to have a grown-up, honest conversation with all union leaders about what is responsible, what is reasonable and what is affordable for our country when it comes to pay," Sunak said.

But at least one union leader warned the worst wave of strike action to grip the country in decades could continue through the year as no sector is willing to back down.
