New Zealand has released an almost 800-page report into the March 2019 killing of 51 Muslim worshippers at two mosques in the city of Christchurch and concluded that authorities could not have been alerted of an imminent attack.
The Royal Commission found that intelligence and security agencies were too focused on “Islamic extremists” and did not pay enough attention to others, including white supremacists, like the attacker.
It also found that the police failed to meet required standards when they issued the attacker a firearms licence without proper character references or background checks.
The Commission’s ultimate finding was that nothing could have been done to stop the attacks.
Australian gunman Brenton Tarrant is serving life in prison without parole for killing 51 people.

Al Jazeera’s Wayne Hay reports from Christchurch, New Zealand.
