After a two-hour manhunt in Quebec City, a 24-year-old man from Montreal north was taken into police custody after going on a stabbing spree that killed two people and injured five others on Halloween night. Dressed in a medieval costume, police say he used a Japanese-saber-style sword to attack 7 people, chosen at random.

Police say the suspect is not linked to any terrorist group, and is suspected to have mental health issues.

Due to COVID-19 measures, all Halloween parties were banned on Saturday night. Authorities say the killer's goal was to stab as many people as possible, and if this had happened during "normal" times, there would have been many more victims.

During a Sunday press briefing, Quebec City's chief of police called it a "night of terror," and the Deputy premier has described the event as "barbaric."

UPDATE: The suspect has been identified as Carl Girouard, a 24-year-old resident of Montreal north.
