Tens of thousands of Nicaraguans are crossing into neighbouring Costa Rica, to escape poverty and what they say is political repression.
They had hoped upcoming elections on Sunday would bring a more democratic government - but the EU's foreign policy chief has already decried the elections, calling them "fake".
President Daniel Ortega has led a months-long crackdown on his opponents as he seeks a controversial fourth term in power.
