New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called the man who carried out a knife attack in an Auckland shopping center a ‘violent extremist’, and confirmed that the suspect had been a person of national security interest since 2016.

The attacker, a Sri Lankan national, injured at least 6 people, 3 of whom are in critical condition, before being shot dead by police. Officers were able to respond within a minute of the attack, as they’d been monitoring the man 24 hours a day due to his ISIS-inspired beliefs. Despite the surveillance, the attacker was able to grab a knife from inside the supermarket and begin slashing at people. Footage of the incident has emerged online, showing panicked shoppers running for cover.

The identity and history of the man can’t be revealed to the public due to a court order, although Ardern said she believed it was in the public interest to share these details, and was working with authorities to release them.
