New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Governor Kathy Hochul held a news conference on Monday, in which they called on federal officials to "expedite" the work authorization process for the thousands of migrants who have arrived over the past year.

"We need changes to the work authorization policies that will let these individuals not have to wait months and possibly years for that legal status. But let's get it on an expedited basis," Hochul said.

As the current system dictates, filing for legal asylum status is followed by a 180-day wait. And that's amid a legal environment in which New York doesn't "have enough judges," Hochul acknowledged.

New York currently has more than 40,000 migrants sheltered.
