New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigns amid mounting pressure over sexual harassment allegations

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo resigned on Tuesday, days after facing a New York state Attorney General investigation that found he sexually harassed at least 11 women, mounting legal pressure and demands for his departure by President Joe Biden and other U.S. officials.

"Everything I have ever done has been motivated by that love. And I would never want to be unhelpful in any way. Given the circumstances, the best way I can help now is if I step aside and let the government get back to governing."

Cuomo, a Democrat who had served since 2011 as governor of the fourth most-populous U.S. state, made the announcement on Tuesday, saying it would be effective in 14 days.

His resignation spared Cuomo from possible removal from office through impeachment proceedings in the state legislature.
