U.S. revellers bid farewell and good riddance to 2021 and ushered in a new year with various countdown celebrations - from watching a giant potato drop in Idaho, a flip flop drop in South Carolina, and classic firework shows from Miami to Las Vegas.

In Seattle, Washington, a fireworks display illuminated the iconic Space Needle observation tower as the rest of the U.S. West Coast joined the start of 2022.

Though the crowds were smaller, New York City welcomed the new year with their traditional Ball Drop as confetti and cheers spread across Times Square.

The Omicron COVID-19 variant dampened New Year festivities around much of the world, and cases in the U.S. have soared to their highest levels on record at over 265,000 per day on average.
