New coronavirus variant spreading fast in UK, no evidence this strain is deadlier: PM Johnson

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Saturday said the new coronavirus variant is quickly spreading, especially in London, but there’s currently no evidence that suggests this strain is deadlier, or that it affects vaccines and treatments.

England’s chief medical officer, Chris Whitty, said that based on preliminary modelling data and rapidly rising incidence rates in the south of England, a government virus advisory group thinks the new strain can spread more quickly.

Plus, Johnson laid out a new set of restrictions for the U.K.’s holiday season.

This includes people living in “tier 4” restriction areas not mixing with anyone outside their household at Christmas. “We cannot continue with Christmas as planned,” said Johnson.
