Need for family doctors is growing in Canada

The residency match, when medical students are matched with postgraduate training positions, is a moment medical students never forget. This year family medicine wound up with more than 250 unfilled residency positions in the matching process.

Dr. Mekalai Kumanan, president of the Ontario College of Family Physicians, calls it a troubling trend. “For me what that signals is that there are issues within the profession in terms of system-level challenges," she says.

The need for family doctors continues to grow across Canada. In 2016, 93 per cent of Canadians reported having access to a primary care provider. By 2023, that number fell to 86 per cent.
