The coronavirus pandemic has claimed more lives in the US than in any other country in the world.
And on Monday, the US appeared set to reach yet another grim new milestone, as the death toll approached 600,000, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University.
A bipartisan group of congress members gathered on the steps of Capitol building to honor American lives lost to COVID-19.
The number of fatalities in the US accounts for some 15 percent of the reported total worldwide.
But with almost half the population fully vaccinated, there is hope the worst may be over.
