ALL THE WAY UP: First year students at the U.S. Naval Academy participated in the annual tradition of climbing the Herndon Monument in Maryland to mark the end of year one.

The class must work together to scramble up the 21-foot greased monument and replace a white plebe hat at the top with an upper classman's hat.

This year's climb took 2 hours, 19 minutes and 11 seconds.
