NATO is actively working with Ukraine and preparing them to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), according to Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. This includes efforts to build Ukraine's defence industry and deepen cooperation on innovation.

"All the work we are doing is to make Ukraine stronger, more interoperable and better prepared to join our alliance," Stoltenberg said at a news conference in Brussels, Belgium, ahead of the annual NATO conference.

Stoltenberg called NATO’s sustained support of Ukraine it’s “most urgent task” amid the country’s ongoing war with Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has repeatedly pushed for NATO membership, but requires an agreement between all Allies.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned Western allies that it is risking a global war over Ukraine and that a direct conflict between Russia and NATO would mean the planet was one step away from a Third World War.

"There are no signs that President Putin is ready to negotiate for peace,” Stoltenberg said. “Because we saw his latest proposal and that was that Ukraine should give up all the territory in the four provinces he has annexed illegally,” he added.
