Finland has officially declared that it will apply for NATO membership. Finnish President Sauli Niinisto and Prime Minister Sanna Marin made the announcement in a joint press conference in Helsinki. Finland shares a long border with Russia. The Finnish Parliament is expected to endorse the decision in the coming days.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg welcomed the statement during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Berlin. He also expressed hope that Ukraine could win the war against Russia.
