NASA's Psyche mission is scheduled to launch on Thursday, which would be the first mission designed to study a metal-rich asteroid up close.
On Tuesday, principal investigator of the Psyche mission Lindy Elkins-Tanton detailed the significance of the mission in preparation for the countdown.
"The world's made of rock, and the world's made of ice, and the world's made of gas," Elkin-Tanton said. "But this will be our first time visiting a world made of a metal surface."
In 2017, NASA calculated Psyche's potential worth to be $10,000 quadrillion USD if humans ever have the resources to mine it, according to Elkins-Tanton.
