The southern Italian city Naples honoured late soccer idol Diego Maradona by illuminating the walls of its waterfront castle, Castel dell'Ovo, with an animation of 100 pictures of the Argentine legend on Friday.

Maradona, widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time before drug and alcohol addiction marred his career, died on Nov. 25 at his home in Argentina at the age of 60.

Maradona came to Naples, a city drenched in sun and superstition, in 1984 when he was 23, where he played some of his most sublime soccer and achieved a god-like status.

The diminutive Argentine left Naples almost 30 years ago, but his spirit never departed, with a giant mural of him still staring down on the traffic-clogged streets and his photograph placed alongside images of saints in shop windows.
