Authorities in Poland and Germany are trying to find out what is behind the death of tonnes of fish in the Oder River, which runs through the two countries.
They suspect chemical contamination, but the substance has not been identified.
Biologists say that low water levels in the river, caused by the drought in Europe, may have aggravated the contamination.
Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports.
