The mother of Tyree Cayer, who was the victim of a fatal stabbing at a downtown Winnipeg library in 2022, stood outside court in Winnipeg, Ont., on Tuesday, following the final sentencing of the last of four youths in connection to Tyree's death. Tania Cayer, holding her son's photo, said she remains heartbroken but is relieved that the court process is over.

The court heard the incident began at the entrance of the Millennium Library in December 2022. Four youths chased 28-year-old Tyree Cayer inside the library and began punching, kicking and stomping him while he was on the ground at the entrance of the downtown library in December 2022. One of the four youths pulled out a knife during the attack and began stabbing Cayer. The group fled and Cayer was taken to hospital but died from a stab wound that punctured his heart.

During a victim impact statement, Cayer's mother addressed the youth directly, saying "Had you met Tyree under different circumstances, he would have been your bro" and "I ask when you get out, please change your life." She also addressed the youth's family saying, "You need to better by him. All of you."

On Tuesday, the youth was handed a sentence of 10 and a half months in custody and 12 months conditional supervision with a five-year weapons ban. The other youths have already been sentenced in connection to the case, including two for manslaughter and another for second-degree murder.
