Most EU countries support pre-departure COVID-19 testing for Chinese flights

European Union (EU) health officials met in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss travel restrictions in response to COVID-19 infection rates in China, with most countries supporting pre-departure testing for incoming passengers.

The European Commission prepared a draft proposal for the talks. In addition to targeting testing, it also included a recommendation for mask-wearing on flights from China, wastewater monitoring for aircraft arriving from China, genomic surveillance at airports and increased monitoring and sequencing, EU spokesperson Tim McPhie told a news briefing.

Plus, Germany is aiming for a joint European response to the surge in COVID-19 infections in China, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said as EU government health officials met for talks on Wednesday.

"We must take the current COVID wave from China very, very seriously," Baerbock said during a news conference with her Portuguese counterpart in Lisbon.
