On Monday, U.S. president-elect Joe Biden and vice-president elect Kamala Harris volunteered at food banks to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK), a national holiday honouring the Black civil rights leader assassinated in 1968.

Biden appeared at the Philabundance food bank in Philadelphia, Penn., while Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff volunteered at Martha’s Table food bank in Washington, D.C.

Cities across the country also honoured Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., as a group of artists in the nation’s capital painted a mural with the aim to revitalize the country with messages of hope, while people in Loxley, Ala. held a parade. A vehicle caravan was also held in Southfield, Mich.

MLK Day is the only U.S. federal holiday designated as a national day of service, according to Americorps. The occasion encourages Americans to volunteer to help their communities.
