Six people are dead and a suspect is in custody after a shooting spree in the small rural Mississippi town of Arkabutla near the Tennessee state line on Friday, according to local officials.

Gov. Tate Reeves’ office said he had been briefed on the shootings and a male suspect was in custody. “At this time, we believe he acted alone,” Reeves said in a statement. “His motive is not yet known.”

According to Sheriff Brad Lance, the shooter went into a store and shot a man with a gun. The shooter then went to a house nearby on Bend Road and shot a woman. Lance said the suspect also went to a home on Arkabutla Dam Road and shot and killed two people there.

"I heard the gunshot from inside my house, I had just woken up and everything and I looked out the window and I saw a dude walking back here with a shotgun,” resident and witness Ethan Cash recalled. “It definitely is a relief, him being in custody. But let's hope for that death sentence man."
