After a Canadian aircraft detected underwater noises in its continued search for the missing Titanic submersible on Wednesday, a Canadian Coast Guard ship has been deployed in the North Atlantic to help locate the OceanGate Titan and its five passengers.

A statement from the U.S. Coast Guard did not elaborate on what rescuers believed the noises could be, though it offered a glimmer of hope for those lost aboard the vessel, as estimates suggest as little as a day’s worth of oxygen could be left if the submersible is still functioning.

Defence Minister Anita Anand told reporters in Ottawa Wednesday HMCS Glace Bay, which has special medical personnel aboard, is heading to the search site.

“We are continuing to support the United States that is leading the search and recovery effort,” she said.

“At this point we are trying to do whatever we can to save lives.”

The Canadian Coast Guard ship, known as John Cabot, has “side scanning sonar capabilities” and is conducting search patterns alongside two other ships.
