At least 79 people are dead after a fishing boat capsized and sank off the coast of Greece on Wednesday, in one of the worst disasters of its kind this year.
Coast Guard, Navy and merchant vessels have launched a vast search-and-rescue effort that is expected to continue overnight.
More than 100 people have been rescued so far after the boat sank in international waters about 75 kilometres southwest of Greece’s southern Peloponnese peninsula. The location is close to the deepest area of the Mediterranean Sea, which could hamper efforts to locate the sunken vessel.
The Italy-bound boat carrying migrants is believed to have sailed from the Tobruk area in eastern Libya.
