Microsoft announced a host of AI upgrades to a suite of products, including ChatGPT and its search engine Bing, in an expansive launch that it hopes will narrow the gap with Alphabet Inc’s Google.

ChatGPT, the viral chatbot from its partner Open AI, is now be able to pull Bing web results for paid subscribers and will soon be able to do the same for its free users, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said.

The company is also expanding plug-ins for Bing to let businesses transact more easily with consumers in its search engine. Microsoft’s marketing officer gave the example of someone searching for dinner ideas through a Bing plug-in and purchasing the ingredients directly from an online vendor.

“These things that we build, in fact, can make a difference to 8 billion people, not some small sort of group of people,” Nadella said.

Like Microsoft, Google has also recently showcased generative AI upgrades to its search engine but has yet to roll out the changes widely.
