U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ken Salazar promised on Friday that a “significant operation” is underway, days after four Americans were caught in a drug cartel shootout, leaving two dead and two held captive for days in a remote region of the Gulf Coast before they were rescued.
“We have a very significant operation underway that will continue until we find those who are responsible for the deaths of these Americans,” Salazar said.
Responding to a question about some suggestions in the U.S. of military action in Mexico as a response to the drug cartels, Salazar said that a military set of operations would not actually resolve the issues or the cartels or address fundamental issues of security interests in North America. Rather, Salazar said that joint co-operations with Mexico are to address the security issues.
Last Friday, four Americans crossed into Matamoros from Texas so that one of them could have cosmetic surgery. A week later, the state's attorney general said that five people have been detained in the case.
