Claudia Sheinbaum won a landslide victory to become Mexico's first female president, inheriting the project of her mentor and outgoing leader Andrés Manuel López Obrador whose popularity among the poor helped drive her triumph.

Sheinbaum, a climate scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, won the presidency with between 58.3 per cent and 60.7 per cent of the vote, according to a rapid sample count by Mexico's electoral authority. That is set to be the highest vote tally percentage in Mexico's democratic history.

“I didn’t get here on my own. We all (women) got here together: our female heroes who created the nation, our female ancestors, our mothers, our daughters, and our granddaughters. I congratulate all the Mexicans that by participating (in the election) demonstrated that Mexico is a democratic country, with peaceful elections," she said.

Sheinbaum has promised to expand welfare programs, maintain austerity within the country, give autonomy to the Bank of Mexico and promote private investment.

Supporters also celebrated her victory in the streets of Mexico City on Sunday night.
