El Salvador's government recently transferred around 2,000 suspected gang members to a newly built "mega prison" as part of an ongoing effort to address the country's issues with gang-related crime.

The massive prison, with a capacity of 40,000, aims to isolate these individuals from the rest of the population, with limited to no possibility of family visitation.

El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, often referred to as a "Philosopher King," used social media to showcase his administration's tough stance on gang crime, with videos of prisoners with shaved heads and gang tattoos being ushered into newly constructed cells.

Bukele urged his political allies in the country's Congress to approve a state of exception in 2022 as a response to the significant rise in murders linked to violent gangs.
