Dr. Tsering Landol received Padma Shri (2006) and Padma Bhushan (2020) for contributions to women's health. As Ladakh's first gynaecologist Dr. Landol emphasises the importance of hygiene during child delivery. One of the major challenges she faced was to break taboos and change mindsets to encourage institutional deliveries among Ladakh's women. To begin with, Dr Landol had to educate women on the need for institutional deliveries, and maternal health and eradicate the social stigma associated with women talking about their health problems. There was practically no awareness of hygiene and nutrition for women, especially pregnant women.
