A large crowd gathered to witness a piece of Edmonton history go up in flames on Monday.

A massive fire destroyed Hangar 11, a Second World War-era building that was part of the former municipal airport.

The 7,400-square-metre wood-framed Hangar 11 was situated between the NAIT campus and the Blatchford neighbourhood in central Edmonton.

The flames and thick, black smoke could be seen from several kilometres away. Strong winds fanned the flames, reducing the hangar to a pile of rubble.

Sarah Ryan has the details.
