Thousands of Cubans took to the streets on Sunday, expressing frustration over COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the pace of vaccinations and what they called neglect from political leaders.
Several called for President Miguel Diaz-Canel to resign.
Special forces jeeps and a heavy police presence were seen, but only a few arrests and scuffles occurred, with no major confrontations.
The country has been experiencing a worsening economic crisis for two years, which the government blames mainly on U.S. sanctions as well as the COVID-19 pandemic. On Monday, Diaz-Canel made a televised address in which he blamed the U.S. for the discontent.
U.S. President Joe Biden spoke about the "remarkable" protests, saying they stood with the people and called on the Cuban government to "refrain from violence or attempts" to silence the people's voices. White House press secretary Jen Psaki also said the protests appeared to be "spontaneous expressions of people who are exhausted with the Cuban government's economic mismanagement and repression." She added one of the difficulties of helping get vaccines to Cuba -- one of the complaints of the public -- was that it was not participating in the international COVAX vaccine program.
