Malaysian authorities have banned the eating of molluscs from a river in the state of Kelantan because of toxic algae bloom commonly known as a "red tide".
It occurs when the algae produce toxins that kill fish and make shellfish dangerous for human consumption.
Hot weather and pollution have made them more common in the Sungai Getting river during the past 30 years, according to the area's fishermen.
Al Jazeera's Florence Looi reports from Tumpat district, Malaysia.
