Malaysia's former prime minister, Najib Razak, has begun a 12-year prison sentence after the country's top court threw out an appeal over a multibillion-dollar corruption scandal.

Najib was found guilty of money laundering and corruption in 2020, with Malaysian authorities accusing him of siphoning cash from a state fund known as 1MDB.

The rejection of his appeal means Najib will be the first former Malaysian prime minister to be jailed.
