Maine’s public safety commissioner Mike Sauschuck said in a Friday update that local police plan to deploy divers and sonar in the waters of the Androscoggin River, as the search for mass shooting suspect Robert R. Card continues. Card, 40, is suspected of killing 18 people at a bar and bowling alley in Lewiston earlier this week.
Sauschuck said a white SUV that authorities believe Card used to get away was found near a boat launch in Lisbon, some 11 kilometres to the southeast of Lewiston where the shootings took place.
“I think that every minute that this goes on, we're more and more concerned, because what's the next thing that's going to happen? And we understand that. And that's why we're working 24/7 to bring this individual to justice and to try to bring some closure and overall safety to our communities,” Sauschuck said. “There’s no question in my mind that we will bring this individual into custody one way or the other.”
Officials ordered tens of thousands of area residents to shelter in place for their safety and indicated that the manhunt could continue for at least several days more. The number of people killed in Wednesday's attacks is close to the annual number of homicides that normally occur in Maine, which has fluctuated between 16 and 29 since 2012, according to Maine State Police.
